Protected forest and flora reserve. Pleasant walks in nature

Subject to the so-called mountain climate of the northwest of Castellón, it is one of the wettest and coldest sectors of the Valencian Community, benefiting from various types of rainfall: those caused by frontal situations with westerly winds, those caused by easterly storms and those favored by the local orography. The dominant vegetation in the Place is an oak grove adehesado of quejigos or Valencian oaks (Quercus faginea) characterized by the presence of singular units of great port, between which are four units (two Valencian oaks, an holm oak and an ivy) considered “Monumental” and included in the guide of “Singular trees and groves of the counties of Castellón”.

Interspersed in the oak are holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia) and, forming the undergrowth, hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) and wild rose (Rosa sp.). The herbaceous layer has a high coverage with endemic species of the Ibero-Levantine area, such as the violet (Viola wikommii), the scabious bite (Succisa pratensis) or the orchids Listera ovata and Dactylorhiza elata subsp. sesquipedalis, which led to the declaration of a surface area of 2.40 ha as a micro-reserve of flora. As for the fauna of the Municipal Natural Park, due to the presence of several springs and flooded areas, amphibians are very well represented by species such as the gallipato (Pleurodeles waltl) or the common toad (Bufo bufo) and runner (Bufo calamita).

In the mature specimens of quejigos and holm oaks, they nest species of birds like the blue climber (Sitta europaea), the carabao (Strix aluco) and the picapinos beak (greater Picoides), also lodging in its hollows populations of some of the rarer bats at the regional level such as the forest bat (Barbastella barbastellus) and the small noctule (Nyctalus leisleri). The appearance of the wild boar (Its scrofa) or the fox (Vulpes vulpes) are frequent around the protected area.
